description of ASTM A335 P1 Seamless Alloy Steel Pipe

ASTM A335 Grade P1 (ASME SA333 GR. P1) specification pipes are generally Ferritic alloy steel pipes used for High-temperature services, this specification falls under the Low Alloy steel pipes category. These pipes are manufactured through the Seamless production process. The UNS designation for this grade P1 is K11522.

ASTM A335 P1 steel pipe advantage

These pipes have a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa and a minimum Yield Strength of 205 MPa with an elongation of a minimum of 30%/20%. This pipe can be both cold drawn or hot-finished with finishing heat-treated to either isothermal annealed or normalized and tempered.

These pipes are ideal for flanging, bending, etc. under high temperature situations. These pipes are used in industries like oil and gas, boilers, chemical and petrochemical as well as in high temperature pipelines and various engineering applications. These pipes are available in various thicknesses and sizes as per the project’s specifications. The pipes are manufactured in size as per NPS / NB size with dimension standard as per ASME/ANSI B36.10. The ends of these pipes can be supplied in threaded, bevelled or plain ends.

These P1 pipes are alloyed with different elements to improve upon their base physical properties and to create new specialized properties such as heat and corrosion resistance. ASTM A335 P1 pipes combine carbon steel with materials like aluminium, copper or nickel as per the requirements of the project. Carbon is the most important element of the mix. It increases strength, hardness and resistance to wear and abrasion. However, the downside is that it lowers ductility, toughness and machinability, to resolve this Molybdenum is added to the chemical composition of pipes which provides improved ductility, enhances its elastic limit and impact qualities.

Permissible Variations in Diameter

1) For pipe ordered to NPS [DN] or outside diameter, variations in outside diameter shall not exceed those specified in Table 6.
2) For pipe ordered to inside diameter, the inside diameter shall not vary more than +/- 1 % from the specified inside diameter.

Permissible Variations in Wall Thickness

In addition to the implicit limitation of wall thickness for pipe imposed by the limitation on weight in Specification A999/A999M, the wall thickness for pipe at any point shall be within the tolerances specified in Table 7. The minimum wall thickness and outside diameter for inspection for compliance with this requirement for pipe ordered by NPS [DN] and schedule number is shown in ASME B36.10M.

Hydrostatic test

The pipes need to be Hydro tested as per ASTM A530.

Mechanical Tests Required

Transverse or Longitudinal Tension Test, Hardness Test, and Flattening or Bend Test

  • For material heat treated in a batch-type furnace, tests shall be made on 5 % of the pipe from each treated lot. For small lots, at least 1 pipe shall be tested.
  • For material heat treated by the continuous process, tests shall be made on a sufficient number of pipe to constitute 5 % of the lot, but in no case less than 2 pipe.
  • Unless otherwise specified, the flattening test or bend test shall be chosen at the manufacturer’s option.

Certification

Certification and test reports, as described in Section 25 of Specification A999/A999M, are required.

Marking on pipes

16.1 In addition to the marking prescribed in Specification A999/A999M, the marking shall include the length, the schedule number, if the pipe is ordered to a schedule number, and the heat number or manufacturer’s number by which the heat can be identified. An additional symbol “S”, if the pipe conforms to any of the Supplementary Requirements S1 to S6, The marking may be by stenciling, stamping, or rolling at manufacture’s option.
Furthermore, the marking designated in below table to indicate the test method(s) shall be included.
